ASYLUM SEEKERS

Asylum seekers are men and women fleeing persecution in their home countries, often war zones.  They come from all over the world.  Although they have committed no crime in the U.S., they are usually incarcerated here in grim surroundings, sometimes for years, while their status is being determined.  Many are traumatized individuals, and significant numbers are victims of torture.  When they are released, they are confronted by a totally new culture.  They have few, if anyone to turn to, and often have no money, housing or clothes.
